The Virgin's downcast eyes — Leonardo studying the silence of a mother who already knows what is to come.
02 — The Christ child
The infant reaches for the carnation — a flower that, in Renaissance painting, foretells the nails of the Passion.
03 — The carnation

One of Leonardo da Vinci's earliest known paintings, held in the permanent collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The Virgin offers a carnation to the Christ Child before an arched window opening onto a distant mountain landscape. The visible craquelure across the faces — a result of the young Leonardo's experiments with oil — has become part of the work's history. Featured here as a guest loan; not available for acquisition.
